About

The simulation and games developed by CELS blend gamification with competency based learning. The most important characteristic of competency-based education is that it measures learning rather than time. Students’ progress by demonstrating their competence, which means they prove that they have mastered the knowledge and skills (called competencies) required for a particular course, regardless of how long it takes.  Gamification is the concept of applying game mechanics and game design techniques to engage and motivate learning.  Together these two components will facilitate learning and mastery of information through a gaming/simulation vehicle.  Educators can assign a competency score which must be obtained prior to moving to the next assignment.  The product will work with most course management systems to allow for seamless input into the gradebook.

A master’s prepared nursing professor with over 15 years’ experience at the college/university level.  Committed to developing and utilizing technology to enhance student learning.  Experience using flipped classrooms, mobile devices, multiple apps, social media and active student learning activities.  My teaching style is more of a facilitator in which my students actively participate in their learning. Research shows clearly that a person must be engaged to learn.  Simulation/gaming provides that necessary environment.
